I wrote this song not long after the tragic bombing of an elementary school for young girls in Minab, Iran. It is written out of a deep sense of grief that I have struggled to fully comprehend. It is also written out of a deep anger towards the perpetrators of this evil act.
I was shaken by this event. The simple lyrics reflect this. I was especially disturbed when watching the Secretary of War gloating, puffing his chest out, and displaying a horrific glee about the killing he is in charge of. His proud boasting of granting no quarter and spurning rules of engagement is one of the most shameful things I have witnessed in my life. I think, as much as I didn’t intend it, this song may have been written for him so that we never forget that his juvenile and evil love for war killed little girls.
This is a living room version of this song. A full version will be on an upcoming album I will be releasing soon(ish).
Little Lights
Verse 1
I heard the news
Little girls killed in Minab
It broke my soul open
Little lights became dark
Chorus:
Lord, forgive me
I want to drop a bomb
Lord, forgive me
Instead, I wrote this song
Verse 2
I saw Pete on the TV
He was going on and on
Grinning, he said,
“Show ‘em no mercy”
Little lights became dark
Chorus
Bridge:
If you don’t understand
That Jesus is weeping in Minab
Your light has gone dark
Your light has gone dark
Repeat Verse 1
End Chorus:
Lord, forgive me
I want to drop a bomb
Lord, forgive me
Instead, I wrote this song
For the little lights
That became dark
